Webinar Summary: Implications of Every Student Succeeds Act for Ohio & Equity

On April 14, 2016, Partners for co-hosted a live webinar conversation with Ohio stakeholders to explore the implications for equity in Ohio and the role of stakeholders in implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The webinar included presentations by  Lonny Rivera, Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ohio Department of Education and Former West Virginia Governor  Bob Wise, President, Alliance for Excellent Education, followed by a panel conversation moderated by  Brad Mitchell, Managing Director of Innovation, Battelle for Kids.

The panel consisted of:

  •  Chad Aldis, Vice President for Ohio Policy and Advocacy, Thomas B. Fordham Institute
  •  Denise Baba, Vice President of Streetsboro City Schools Board of Education and President-Elect, Ohio School Boards Association
  •  Marsha Mockabee, President and CEO, Urban League of Greater Cleveland
  •  Michael Tefs, Superintendent, Wooster City Schools
  •  Kay Wait, Teacher and Instructional Planner, Toledo Public Schools
  •  Chris Woolard, Senior Executive Director, Center for Accountability and Continuous Improvement, Ohio Department of Education

The conversation focused mainly on what authentic engagement means to various stakeholder communities across Ohio addressing the need to educate and prepare all members of the stakeholder community for heightened levels of engagement called for by ESSA, the importance of working diligently to ensure stakeholders not typically present have a opportunity to be included, and meaningful collaboration on the issues most important to individual communities, schools, and students.
